Saturday 5.15.10

President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department -- the Department of Defense.

Soldiers of the 20th Engineer Battalion out of Fort Hood comprise what is known as Task Force Lumberjack: an elite team conducting route clearance operations to neutralize explosive hazards and ensure freedom of movement for the Afghan people and coalition forces.

These soldiers founded Lumberjack CrossFit as a way to train while deployed, and currently is a way of life for approximately 800 soldiers. On November 5th of last year, Lumberjack CrossFit lost 4 soldiers and had 11 more wounded in the shooting at Fort Hood. On December 5th last year, CrossFit affiliates world wide held a fundraiser WOD in their honor call the Lumberjack 20. That day more than $50,000 was raised for the families of the fallen soldiers and fellow CrossFitters.

Today, we will do that WOD again to honor and thank all the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. From all of us at The Compound, thanks for all you do!
