The Compound Crew after a successful "Barbells For Boobs" fundraiser on Saturday. |
On Saturday 10.23.10 The Compound hosted "Barbells For Boobs," and did the WOD that has become known as Amazing "Grace." Amazing “Grace” began as a small, local fundraising event to help fund mammograms for the young women of Southern California who couldn’t afford one themselves. Thanks to a ton of support (and sweat!) from the CrossFit community, they were able to raise $4000 and fund their very first mammogram.
The calm before the storm. |
Before long, CrossFit affiliates from around the world sent countless email messages and phone calls asking how they could participate and help the cause. Just one year after the inaugural event, over 150 CrossFit Affiliates from all over the world participated in the 2010 Amazing “Grace” fundraiser during the month of October.
The many brave souls this WOD was dedicated to. |
Approximately 60 athletes from The Compound, CrossFit Solano, and even some non-CrossFitters showed up at The Compound yesterday to do their part. In 5 heats, everyone got to do 30 cleans and jerks for time: some did the rx'd weights (135 lbs for men, and 95 lbs for women), some did scaled -down weights, some worked around injuries, and some had to learn the lift first before the WOD even started! But everyone gave all they had, worked through it as hard as they could, and shared in the pain and the joy of it together.
The aftermath of intensity and all-out effort. (Chris was ok, I checked!) |
The top men's time went to Jade from CrossFit Solano at 2:17 as rx'd. The top women's time went to Taryn, also from from CrossFit Solano, at 2:30 as rx'd. The top time from The Compound athletes and coaches on the men's side was Brad at 2:22 as rx'd, and for the Compound women it was Nicole at 4:04 as rx'd. Most of us hit PR's today with the adrenaline rush of competition and the positive atmosphere in the air. All of us gave everything we had and put it all on the line.
Kelsey locks out another rep! |
If you've never been to a CrossFit event or a competition, make a point to get to one. Even as a spectator you can't help but get caught up in the atmosphere and want to push yourself a little harder.
This was a great event, made so by the great people who attended, helped out, and participated. Most importantly, all of you helped to raise approximately $1000 for the cause!
Look for another event coming next month to be hosted by CrossFit Solano. It should be a good time, a great workout, and the chance to compete on a fun, informal level with other athletes. Let's keep reppin' The Compound! bc
Venit Envinco!
Great write-up! Hope to get back into the swing of things and get over my fear of competition. Thanks again, for all you guys do!
